Thinking about technology

Watching "Did you know iv" was interesting...especially the comments about China. Having lived in Shanghai for 7 months, we quickly realized how behind the US is. Teaching Chinese students is actually fun...even with 35 - 40 students in the class, you will not have a discipline problem. They are motivated to learn, they have respect for teachers and their classmates, and each classroom is well equipped with technology. After 5 weeks I finally got phone service...and I'm still working on getting computers! :)

Shelly, I was educated in Hong Kong until I was 18. Our class size was normally 45 to 47 students. I have no recollection of any major behavior issues. We were expected to be respectful to the teachers. We were taught to get up and greet the teachers when they enter the classroom. When it's time for them to leave, again we had to get up and thank them. Students stayed in the same classroom, differenet teachers came to teach different subjects.

It makes me wonder why it can't seem to be that way here. What is it that they are able to do that we, as a society are unable to do, in order to get our children be respectful?
